Shipping Cars Overseas

The car shipping industry has take leaps and bounds, thanks to digital technology. The world is getting smaller and car shipping companies are finding it easier to ship cars overseas - from United States to anywhere in the world. There are challenges when shipping internationally and here are a few tips.

Make sure that you have all the necessary documents to prove that you own the car. Foreign governments can be very particular against shipping illegally purchased items, which is why one of the first things they would check is proof that a vehicle was not stolen or being illegally transported.

This is true even in Hawaii, where, of course, American laws and regulations are still very much observed. International car shipping is quite a stretch for a car shipping company. Make sure to hire only a company who has had experience in this area. There are car transporters that are experts to specific countries.

For instance you are sending your car to Asia, hire a vehicle shipping company who has connections in Asia and are aware of the local culture. Car shipping companies in the United States are part of a worldwide network of car shippers and haulers so that your vehicle gets picked up by a local car shipping company at the country of destination.

Most reliable shipping companies in the US will make sure to see your car through until it is finally received at its final point of destination. Vehicles are shipped overseas on board a RoRo (roll-on, roll-off) vessel or boat. An entire deck is reserved for vehicles where they are strapped, fastened and pegged to make sure they won’t move around during shipment.

Shipment is slow, and so prepare yourself to wait for weeks and maybe even months. Make sure you have knowledge about how things are done at the country of destination. Needless to say, other governments impose rules and laws that are different to what you are familiar with here in the US. If you have not lived in that country or do not know anyone there, do a little research.

Check out its importation regulations and traffic rules. You are aware that in British-influenced countries, traffic is driven at the other side. This means an American car that is shipped to the UK, Australia or Singapore would need to go through major alterations so that it could apply to local traffic norms.

Lastly, understand that there are extra charges. Normally, a reliable car transportation company knows beforehand how much you would need to pay as your car reaches its country of destination and so may include international costs in their charges. In some cases, there are unforeseen charges at the Customs office. Often, your vehicle is at the mercy of the Customs Officer in charge.

Your car might need to go through a number of stops and inspections before it is released. In most cases, different charges need to be paid for in each inspection. Make sure a friend, relative, or yourself is ready to personally receive your car at the final point of destination so that you can sign off the necessary documents and inspect your car for damages.
