POV Shipping Companies

Soldiers constantly move from base to base across the United States and outside. This practice actually forms a subculture in America involving children who are growing without a sense of permanence. They cannot claim any real home address. As the family moves so does their household items and the family car. This is why the family is always in contact with hauling service companies and POV shipping companies.

POV stands for Private-Owned Vehicle, and a soldier is entitled to have one POV. In the event of moving, the government is duty-bound to move one POV as a way to guarantee the welfare of the soldier and to help the family quickly establish as sense of home in their newly assigned base. A soldier only has to show documents to prove that he owns or have leased a POV, which may be an automobile, motorcycle, van or truck.

Now, some soldiers have more than one POV. For the second vehicle, it is the soldier’s responsibility to have it shipped by hiring a car transporter. It is still necessary, though, that the army is aware of which car transporter was hired.

In most cases, a military base will recommend a car shipping company that a soldier has used before and that has been issued an entry pass to several bases around the country. It is to the advantage of the soldier and military to hire the same companies that already know the location of the camps and have a high regard of the military, and therefore will perform excellent service and maybe even offer discounts as a form of service to the military.

When international relocation is involved, most soldiers decide to leave their POV behind because taking them to another country may require vehicle modifications. Some modifications may be minor while some are major and would need hundreds of dollars to perform. For instance, when going to Europe, the steering wheel needs to be moved to the other side. When this happens, it is better to leave the POV behind and buy a cheap one in the country of destination and then just sell it after the soldier is done in that country.

When a soldier is on Permanent Change of Station (PCS), he or she may leave the POV with the military for storing, provided that the soldier shows a letter from the transporting office authorizing the POV storage. POV’s to be left on storage may have the following items inside: jack, tire iron, tire chain, fire extinguisher, nonflammable tire inflator, first-aid kit, jumper cables, warning triangle, a spare tire and snow tires with wheels.

The military and POV shipping companies do their best in handling a soldier’s vehicles so that this becomes the least of his or her worries. The most important thing a soldier should think about is his or her family. As a soldier moves from base to base, ultimately the children follow.
