Insuring Your Car Before Shipping It! Why?
There are very few times in your life when car insurance is as important as when you are shipping your vehicle.
Even when you have carefully selected a shipping company that you trust will handle your vehicle carefully and deliver it safely to its destination, you need to spend some time comparing cover options and car insurance quotes to make sure that, in the event of something going wrong in transit, you are not going to suffer financially.
Any company that offers auto transportation will have its transportation vehicles insured for liability and cargo. When you are selecting a company to ship your car with, always request a copy of their insurance certificate.
A failure to do so could put you at risk of having your car transported by a company whose insurance would not be sufficient to cover the damage that could happen to your car while it is in transit.
Don’t be afraid to ask to see the certificate, as shipping firms are required by law to provide it to you, and you are well within your rights to check that the information on the certificate is correct by contacting the insurance company the policy was purchased with, or the Department of Transportation.
Read the small print of your shipping firm’s insurance. Depending on the vehicle you are having shipped, your car may or may not be fully covered under the terms of the insurance, due to the various car insurance groups that different vehicles fall into. If your car is a high value or prestige vehicle, the level of coverage might not be sufficient to protect your car from the potential damage that might occur in transit.
While most shipping companies are extremely vigilant against the possibility of damage to vehicles being shipped, it is worth being prepared for the unfortunate eventuality of your car being returned to you with damage. To support any insurance claim you might need to make, it is worthwhile taking some photographs of your car before shipping it and after receiving it.
If the car shipping company’s insurance does not cover the full value of your car, find out whether or not there is the option to purchase additional insurance. By taking these precautions, and by taking the time to fully research the operations and history of the shipping company you choose to send your car with, you should enjoy a problem-free auto shipping experience.
