Car Transport by Train

Known as the “green” transport, car transport by train is the most eco-friendly way of transporting automobiles around the country, as it is the cheapest. The continuous growth and development of rail transportation is threatening car trucking, which of course is still the leading method of transporting vehicles.

Through the years before car shipping has become a staple industry, transporting people, machines, technologies, and products from state to state was done by train. Today, rail freight is still the best way of moving agricultural products, industrial products, and chemicals, which is why automobile transportation by train remains to be an option to many people.

One of the most recognized trains in the country is Amtrak. They have serviced the American people through the years, moving thousands from city to city or state to state every day. Amtrak also ships cars but only from the Washington DC area to Orlando, Florida. This reveals one of the most limiting disadvantages of rail shipping: it can only go to where rail tracks go. It has a fixed route and limited scope. Because of this, people go to trains only when the points of origin and destination are near a rail head or train station.

Another disadvantage is that train companies do not have people who will haul cars for its customers. This is why it is necessary that car owners should be there in the ride to make sure that the car is rolled on and off the train. So, if the car owner is traveling to the car’s point of destination anyway, it’s good to try transporting the family car by train.

While these disadvantages are limiting rail shipping as an industry, car transport by train also has its important advantages. It is much cheaper than the common car shipping by truck. This makes it attractive to anyone who is shipping more than one commodity or something large. It can haul more cargo at one time, which is one reason why it is cheaper.

Another advantage is safety. Cars and shipments are safely strapped inside a railcar, away from road debris or bad weather that could harm the cargo. Rail shipping is a form of enclosed shipping.

Typically, enclosed car shipping is more expensive. This when cars are shipped inside a closed and locked steel container to make sure not a single speck of dust could reach it as it is hauled onto a truck or ship. The closed car shipping method is advised for really expensive, rare, and exotic cars such as a Rolls Royce, Jaguar or MacLaren. Train shipping gives almost the same amount of care for regular sedans as they are hauled inside a railcar.

Finally, to solve the problem of rail shipping’s limited scope, car transport by train could involve a number of vehicles. This becomes a multi-transport system using trucks, trains, ocean carriers and airplanes.

This means a car may be transported by train to a certain point of destination, to be picked up by a truck and on to the final point of destination, perhaps also needing a liner or a plane. This makes the process efficient, quick and less expensive.
